Steel, Inc was incorporated in 1947 as a subsidiary of Bristol Steel, Bristol, Virginia. Steel, Inc was initially a detailing service and miscellaneous steel fabricator. Karl Kranig was the principal figure in the early years growing the company through the fifties to a medium size structural steel fabricator. By the early sixties Steel, Inc was fabricating for the retail, school and light industrial markets and expanding its customer base. As the Atlanta market grew so did Steel, Inc.
In 1963, Karl Kranig bought out Bristol Steel and became the sole owner and C.E.O., elevating Gene Holloway to President.
The late sixties were boom years at Steel, Inc, successfully completing several marquee projects.
By the late sixties Steel, Inc had emerged as a major player in the Atlanta and Southeast markets with a reputation for service and quality. The seventies saw Steel, Inc move into the heavy industrial and energy markets. Steel, Inc was one of the primary fabricators for the Southern Company fabricating and erecting several power plants and attendant structures. In conjunction with power plants came the airport work - hangars, terminals, concourses, etc.
In 1986 Karl Kranig then 84 years old, decided to sell Steel, Inc. This sent shock waves throughout the company as many of the key employees had never worked anywhere else. Gene Holloway put together an internal group of employees, which included himself, Jim Newton, Skip Burdette and Dan Williams.
This group affected a highly leveraged buyout to take ownership of Steel, Inc with the lending institution closely monitoring every move of the newly reorganized company.
Steel, Inc survived and prospered and retired the debt in 1991 largely due to several key projects during a weak market.
The most notable was the Delta Airlines Technical Operations Center and Paint Hangers. This was a twenty million dollar project and it was in fact the franchise maker. The company never looked back and enjoyed unparalleled success and growth during the nineties, joining the Fabrications Technologies Corporation rollup in 2000.
The Fabrication Technologies Corporation was dissolved in 2004. In its place Fab South, LLC was formed in May 2004 to include the four strongest operating companies within the preexisting Fabrication Technology Corporation structure.
Those companies are Steel, LLC (formerly known as Steel, Inc) Scottdale, GA, Steel Fabricators LLC, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Fabco LLC, Daytona Beach, FL and Lyndon Steel LLC in Winston Salem, NC. This company combines four of the best fabricators in the southeast. With a favorable debt structure and a substantial bonding line we look forward to continued success in the future.
The continued growth of Steel, LLC into the next millennium will bring new challenges and opportunities. It is this type of challenge that will continue to allow Steel, LLC to grow and continue to be part of the future progress of Georgia and the Southeast.
